Conservation And Restoration Involve Different Approaches

Gordon MacKay assists customers in their efforts to select the appropriate conservation technique. Treatments can be classified under two categories, conservation or restoration. Conservation treatments are the least intrusive because alteration of the historic works' appearance is minimized and protection from the elements is provided.

Through a restoration treatment, a return to the works' original appearance may be achieved.

Gordon MacKay's Attention to Detail Sets Us Apart

Treatments are based on research into the history of the historic work and the artists' career. This often produces insight into artistic preferences and creative processes. The gentlest method that will effectively clean is used. This insures that detail is not damaged or lost and that the effect on the substrate is minimized. The materials and methods used must be reversible. This allows future conservators to make any changes deemed necessary. All materials are replaced in-kind to preserve the artists' intent and to insure compatibility with the existing materials. All changes are documented.
